Ethical Foundation
The IICFIP Code of Professional Ethics establishes the fundamental principles that guide the conduct of forensic investigation professionals in their pursuit of truth, justice, and professional excellence.
Preamble
Forensic investigation professionals hold a position of trust in society. The public relies on their expertise, integrity, and objectivity to uncover the truth in matters of significant importance. This Code of Professional Ethics sets forth the ethical standards that all IICFIP members and certified professionals must uphold in their practice.
Fundamental Ethical Principles
1. Integrity
Maintain the highest standards of honesty and moral principles in all professional activities. Act with transparency and truthfulness in all communications and findings.
2. Objectivity
Conduct investigations with impartiality and independence. Avoid conflicts of interest and ensure that personal bias does not influence professional judgment.
3. Competence
Maintain and enhance professional knowledge and skills through continuous learning. Only undertake work within the scope of professional competence.
4. Due Diligence
Exercise reasonable care and thoroughness in all professional activities. Follow established methodologies and document findings appropriately.
5. Confidentiality
Respect the confidentiality of information obtained during professional activities and only disclose information as legally required or authorized.
6. Professional Behavior
Conduct oneself in a manner that maintains the reputation of the profession and serves the public interest at all times.
Professional Responsibilities
To the Public
- Serve the public interest and contribute to the administration of justice
- Maintain professional competence and continue professional development
- Report findings accurately and objectively, regardless of client preferences
- Protect the reputation and integrity of the forensic investigation profession
To Clients
- Provide professional services with diligence and competence
- Maintain confidentiality of client information
- Avoid conflicts of interest and disclose potential conflicts when they arise
- Provide clear and honest communication about the scope and limitations of services
To Colleagues and the Profession
- Treat colleagues with respect and professionalism
- Share knowledge and expertise to advance the profession
- Mentor junior professionals and support their development
- Report unethical behavior when observed
Ethical Guidelines for Practice
Investigation Conduct
- Use only legal and ethical methods to gather evidence and information
- Maintain detailed and accurate records of all investigative activities
- Preserve the integrity of evidence and follow proper chain of custody procedures
- Report all relevant findings, both inculpatory and exculpatory
Expert Testimony
- Provide testimony that is accurate, objective, and within the bounds of professional expertise
- Clearly distinguish between facts and opinions
- Acknowledge limitations and uncertainties in findings
- Refuse to provide misleading or false testimony
Continuing Education
- Stay current with developments in forensic investigation methodologies
- Participate in professional development activities and training
- Maintain required certifications and credentials
- Contribute to the advancement of the profession through research and publication
IICFIP Professional Oath
Enforcement and Compliance
All IICFIP members and certified professionals are required to adhere to this Code of Professional Ethics. Violations may result in disciplinary action, including but not limited to:
- Formal reprimand
- Mandatory additional training
- Temporary suspension of membership or certification
- Permanent revocation of membership or certification

When faced with ethical dilemmas or uncertainties, professionals are encouraged to:
